According to educator and author of over 30 books, Eric Jensen, the new reality and the new normal in America, is poverty. Jensen writes that forty percent of all Americans bring home less than $20,000 dollars a year and fifty-one percent of all Americans bring home less than $30,000 a year. Indeed, poverty is affecting our students. And consider this. About half of American children today will be on food stamps at some point in their lives tomorrow. And greater yet, American children are experiencing emotional poverty in episodic fashion—like abandonment, loneliness and feeling unloved.
